Glaucoma is the third–most common cause of blindness in the world. The good news is that if it is caught in its early stages, it can be treated by our expert optometrist.
Glaucoma is caused by several diseases that attack the optic nerve. It is estimated that as many as one in 250 people may suffer from glaucoma at some point in their lives. There is evidence of hereditary factors in the onset of glaucoma, so if any of your family members have been treated for the disease, we strongly urge you to come in for an eye exam and be tested.
Glaucoma can be treated in one of two primary ways:
- Laser surgery can be used to reduce the pressure on your eyes and in restoring your vision.
- Eye drops can be employed, depending on how early in the progression of the disease glaucoma is diagnosed.
Glaucoma screenings are a part of all of our eye exams. If you test positive for glaucoma during an eye exam, we'll be happy to discuss which treatment option is right for you.
